Twenty-One Different Varieties of Dates

1. Mazafati Date (Rotab)
It is the most well-known and most distinguished kind of date in Iran and is welcomed by not only Iranian people but also the people all around the globe.
This sweet, fleshy, and fresh date has an attractive dark black color and a relatively high humidity (15%~35%). The best quality of mazafati date is grown in Bam (a city in the southeast of Iran). Also, it is cultivated at Jiroft, Kahnuj, Saravan, and Iranshahr.

2. Piarom Date
It is the most expensive kind of date in Iran. It is semi-dry and serotinous. The major part of its sugar is Fructose that can be used easily and fast in human body metabolism. Fructose is the permissive sugar for people who are suffering from diabetes. Piarom date is mostly produced in Hormozgan province of Iran.

3. Gantar Date
It is one of the valuable exported dates of Khuzestan province, Iran. It doesn’t have domestic use in Iran and is mainly exported.
Gantar date is moist and can be kept for a long time.

4. Estameran Date
It is grown in Iran and is in a group of semi-dry dates so it can be shipped easily and is suitable for export.
Estameran date has a high amount of sugar. Therefore it is an appropriate fruit for athletics. About 70% of palm trees in Khuzestan province of Iran are providing an Estameran date.

5. Shahani Date
It is moist, first grade and has a soft texture and a pretty color. It is applied for production of date syrup. Shahani date is mostly grown and harvested in Heram palms of Iran.

6. Zahedi Date
It is golden, oval, semi-dry and soft with a thick skin. Zahedi date is less sweet in comparison to other types of dates.
It is grown widely in the south of Iran and is popular all around the world because of its high amount of fiber, balanced amount of sugar, and its easy storage and shipping.

7. Kabkab Date
It is a semi-dry date that has a thicker skin in comparison to other types of dates. It has a high amount of juice or sap and is one of the high consumed dates in Iran.

8. Rabbi Date
This is a semi-dry date with a high durability. It is produced in wide areas of Sistan & Baluchestan, Iran.
It has a wrinkled and long length appearance. Rabbi date is dark, close to black, and shiny.

9. Barhi Date
This is a yellow, moist, and sweet date that tastes like caramel and brown sugar. As they are very gourmet, usually they are sold before harvesting from the trees.
It can be kept for several months if you freeze it. It is originally produced in Iraq.

10. Allmehtari Date
This fruit is relatively small and linear. It has high economic value because it is ripening early. Originally it is grown in Hormozgan province of Iran.

11. Khazravi Date
This soft date is originally produced in Iraq but is widely grown in Khuzestan Province, Iran. Khazravi date is the second area under cultivation in Khuzestan. The core of khazravi date is separated completely from the flesh so the fruit can be used totally without waste.

It is a high-grade date that has high durability.
This small date is grown in Behbahan of Khuzestan.

13. Mordasang Date
This date is produced in a low amount at Kerman province of Iran. It is only used in Kerman and some southern areas of Iran.

It is a sweet, dry, and soft date that softens in the mouth. It is the production of Saudi Arabia and has medical benefits.

21. Kholas Date
This date relates to Al-Qassim and Al-Kharg regions of Saudi Arabia. The ripped kholas date has a caramel aroma. Kholas date is sticky when it is fresh and usually is eaten by Arabic coffee.

The Sweet Danger of Sugar
Sucrose as a natural sweetener has some benefits but it can be the cause of plenty health problems including blood pressure, cardiovascular diseases, tooth decay, obesity, and diabetes. Even sugar consumption may increase the risk of cancer, depression, and fatty liver.
It may accelerate the skin aging process, increase cellular aging, and drains your energy. Diabetes as the most dangerous disease made due to sugar consumption is approaching to be the biggest epidemic health problem of twenty-first century!
According to an estimate of International Diabetes Federation, the number of people with diabetes was 246 million on 2007 (with 46% of all those affected in the 40–59 age group) and likely to increase to 380 m by 2025. The number of deaths attributed annually to diabetes is around 3.2 million.

Date syrup as a Fine Sugar Alternative
Organic dates are a great source of not only nutrients and vitamins but also natural sugar. So is date’s syrup a good substitute for white sugar and other sweeteners?
Date syrup is one of the most valuable secondary products of fresh dates that is full of natural sugars including fructose and glucose. The key point is that its sucrose percentage is low! Physiologically fructose sugar doesn’t need insulin for absorption in the body so it is a suitable sugar for diabetic people and is an energy producer.
Also, Date syrup is rich in potassium, calcium, Phosphorus, and iron so it is a useful food for children, pregnant women, and old people. It is a good medicine for anemia and it reduces rheumatism pain, acts as a refreshment drug and improves the heart health.
Adding Date’s syrup in diet, in addition, to be a good substitution for harmful sugar or artificial sweeteners can also act as a nutrient that is full of vitamins and minerals.

How to Make Date Syrup at Home
Place the fresh dates in a small bowl; cover with hot water and let sit for 30 minutes. Then put the bowl on the oven and let it boil till the dates become very soft.
Then let it be cold and then use a sieve to separate the juice of dates from its flesh and skin. For the last step, boil the juice until it becomes dense. Transfer to an airtight container and it is better to store in the refrigerator. Pay attention not to use dry dates as they are not suitable for this aim.
